Carei locality is situated near old swamp Ecsed, it appears in documents for the first time in1264. The locality was the house of The Karolyis, for many centuries it had the right to organize weekly fairs, since 1346, and in 1482 even two national fairs. At the middle of XVI century the majority of the Carei inhabitants passed to Calvinist religion, fact that resulted serious religious conflicts. Probably this was the reason for which the crypt of The Karolyis was built in Căpleni and not in Carei. The locality was deserted by Austrians , Hungarians, Turckishs as well, and in 1834 it was shaken by an earthquake. The main atraction of the locality is the Castle of The Karolyis which resisted along the centuries even if it suffered many modifications. The population of the town increased in the first half of XVIII century, The Karolyis brought many Swabians, Ruthenians, Slovaks, Romanians, Jewishs, the town become slowly multy ethnicites.
