Gilău Lake

Gilau Lake, located near Gilău, takes over the water produced by the hydroelectric power plant located at the foot of Someșul Cald Dam. Leaving water turbines reach a concrete bed after a journey of approx. 300 m, flows into the tail of the Gilau reservoir. The lake here came out by lifting a 23 m dam in 1971. At that time, without the Someș Cald lake, the waters came directly from the accumulation of Tarnița.

The 285m wide dam retains 4.2 million cubic meters of water. The tributaries of Someș Cald and Somesul Rece also flow here. This 68-acre lake is the source of drinking water for the city of Cluj-Napoca. Upstream water pollution creates serious problems for the Gilau Water Works, where makes drinking water from the lake water. It is no wonder that specialists are fighting to ban all activities on the lakes that supply potable water plants.
