In 1219, when Andras II. Hungarian king returned home with luck, he ordered a cross and chapel to be built in front of the castle gate of Sibiu, were every Friday a service would be held there. Later the chapel had been integrated in the Dominican cloister. In 1417 Peter Lantregen Austrian artists work, a 7.3 meter tall stone cross, had been superposed on the altar. Because the cloister and the church had been outside the girdle walls the Tatars destroyed them and even though they were quickly rebuilt, the Dominicans with the approval from the city, in 1474, moved inside the girdle walls and built a new church. The cloister and church outside became leprosy hospitals. The buildings were standing until 1659. Meanwhile Gyorgy Rákóczi II. Transylvanian monarch starts a war against the polish, to conquer their throne, but fails and because this attack hadn't been allowed by the Turks, they installed a new monarch for Transylvania, Ákos Barcsay. When Rákóczi found out that Barcsay wanted to get his Hungarian domain also, he started a war against Barcsay, who refuges into the fortification at Sibiu. So Rákóczi attacked the city. Then the council of Sibiu demolished the outside buildings so that the enemy had no place to hide. The Saint Cross ended to be buried underneath the debris. The assault lasted until 1660 when the enemy troops departed. In 1683 when the Turks fled from Vienna, the mayor of Sibiu gave order that the great cross should be dug-out and erected. In 1755 the Saint Cross Chapel is built on the cross, becoming a part of it.
