On the site of the fortress now in 1495 was the Bogáthy manor. Documents from the 16th century already talk about a fortress. The first owners were not lucky, Bogáthy Gáspár, Kendi Ferenc and Kornis Boldizsár were executed, but the building remained the property of the family of the latter.

Kornis Ferenc in 1649 give the castle for Prince Rákóczi György II, who trusts designers Venetian castle Agostino Serena transformation. Beyond the ditch filled with water Mures, defensive walls and bastions, it was the castle, warehouses, barracks and stables. The castle has a rectangular shape with an inner courtyard and bastions in the corners. The walls had a thickness of 1 m. From the courtyard galleries were not the original project drawings.

Between the walls of the fortress were organized 15 national assemblies, among them the last in 1690. From the owner Bornemissza Anna, he reached Apafi Mihály II. He was then taken to permanent exile in Vienna. The castle was inherited by his widow, Bethlen Katalin, from whom he arrived at Chief Chancellery Bethlen Miklós, the property remaining in this family until 1887. They built the gate building decorated with a snake blazon. They also built the visible roof today even after the fire in 1802. On a fateful night of 1887, Bethlen Márk dumps the castle during a party.

Gross Haller Jenő became the new owner, followed by the Roman Catholic Status of Transylvania. They set up a model farm here and opened an economic school. Catholics are now fighting for the restitution of nationalized buildings. In 2012 the Teleki Foundation renovated the roofs of the bastions.
