Transfăgărășan is a 151 km length road, linking Bascov to DN1. It cross the Fagaras mountain at an altitude of 2042 m.

Built between 1970-1974 the Transfagaras was designed as a strategic road between Transylvania and Muntenia. Being part of the DN7c national road network with a length of 151 km, it starts in the Bascov commune and ends on DN1 road (Sibiu - Brasov), near Cârțișoara. The portion of Transfăgărășan starts at Arefu and has a length of 91 km.

The road crosses the Făgăraș Mountains, the highest point being near the tunnel, 2042 m, being placed on the second place. after Transalpina (2145 m). The Transfagarasan passes over 830 footpaths and 27 viaducts.

From November 1 to June 30, the road is closed to public traffic between kilometer 104 at Piscu Negru and kilometer 130 at Balea Cascade, being snow-covered, its snowing not being possible due to the danger of avalanche. Between Balea Lake and Balea Waterfall a cable car travels. From the Bâlea chalet The waterfall to the intersection with DN1 is 21 km.
