The Karolina Column in the Museum Square, the former center of the old city, is the oldest statue of the city. It commemorates the first royal visit of Francis I and Caroline Augusta during August 18-27. 1817.

The column was made from public donations and the amount missing was provided by the prosecutor based in exchange noble title. 10 m column was erected in front of statues of Matei Corvin and in 1898 was moved here.

The two Biedermeier bas-reliefs were made by Viennese sculptor Josef Klieber. The eastern one shows the entrance parade, and on the western side the empress offers money to an old man. There is also an oil lamp on it, although in Cluj only since 1827 there was public lighting.
