In 1879 was the first painting recorded in the Banatului museum's accounts, at which amid 1888-1895 is added the donation of Ormos Zsigmond, art collector and historian, one of the founders of the museum. In time the painting patrimony was completed by new donations and acquisitions. Thus, in 1943, the museum moved in a vane of the Culturii Palace and in 1947in the Huniade castle.

In 1987 the art branch of the Banatului Museum moves in the western vane of the Baroc Palace from Piața Unirii. But this space was too small for the collections. Since January 2006 the branch becomes the Art Museum, which at the present numbers more than 8500 exhibits.
