The first church in Șumuleu was built between 1442 - 1448 by the Franciscans settled down on these lands in the XVth century. It was surrounded by a stone wall. At the construction costs contributed János Hunyadi.

In 1661 the church and monastery were burned by the Turks. It was renovated but in 1802 became overcrowded. From that church remains only a portal and a cellar window.

The new church was built between 1804-1876 after Konstantin Schmidt plans. In 1830 the towers were completed in 1876 the main altar. The pulpit (1835) and the furniture made by Papp Miklós from Brasov. The altar painting contributed Csürös József and Szopos Sándor.

The stained glass windows were made in 1905 in the Czech Republic, the statues in Austria and the reliefs by local craftsmen. The organ with 2824 pipes was made in 1931 in the Wegenstein Lipot workshop in Timisoara. The Marian pilgrimage's miraculous statue carved from linden wood was made between 1515 and 1520, has a height of 2.27 m, the sculptor is unknown. It survived in 1661 the Turkish attack, only one visible damage to the statue's face and neck. At the statue many prayer was hearing, on the wall are several plaques and gifts.

The funeral board of Captain Mikes Kelemen from 1686, can be seenin the church and in the lobby of the prelates commemorative plaques. In the crypt near franciscans were buried and some lay people.
