The story of this town dates back to the age of stone. During the Roman period here was the village Dierna, and during the feudal age the main royal fortress of Ahtum and Glad. After 1524 the turcs gained it, and after 1660 it became a centre with more than 300 houses.

In the year of 1688 it was won by the austrians, and in 1768 it became the main headquarter of certain austrian soldiers, being defeated in 1819 by T. Vladimirescu. It became a real centre of commerce, industry in the 19th century but was flooded at the construction of the main hydroelectric gate Portile de Fier on the Danube.

The population was moved to another place close to this between1966-71, and there was a completely new town formed including Jupalnic, Trufau and Coramnic. 20 km away from the town there is an island called Ada-Khale, being flooded with water 20 m.
