The stronghold built in XIII century is on the borders of Subcetate locality on the Plai set which rises over the Barcău valley. In 1317-1341 Valcău was a royal area. Since 1341 was the property of The Doncs, The Gönyűis, The Bánfis and The Bánffys who kept it up until XX century. In 1514 the stronghold is attacked and occupied by the Crusaders who participated at the revolt led by Dózsa György. In this period the documents of The Bánffys disappear. In XVI century the stronghold has a defensive role. In 1660 after the fall of Oradea the permanent guard was taken into consideration but in winter of 1665 Hamza Pasa sent approximately 500 soldiers from Oradea stronghold who attacked and conquered Valcău stronghold.
